Spring Home Maintenance

Living in New England, we’re no stranger to harsh winters and humid summers — and neither is your home. For homeowners, the changing of the seasons is a great time to think about home maintenance. Keeping up with home maintenance seasonally not only keeps your home in tip-top shape, but it can also help prevent costly repairs in the future. Here at Doherty Insurance, we know that Merrimack Valley experienced its fair share of snow, ice, and cold temperatures this winter and now that things have warmed up, it’s time to get outside and tackle any damage winter may have left behind. Here are common home maintenance tasks to accomplish this spring.

Inspect the Roof

Walk around your home and do a visual inspection of your roof. If you are able to see missing, loose, or damaged shingles, it is time to call a professional. For roof areas too high to inspect from the ground, we always recommend hiring a licensed roofer to perform the inspection and make any necessary repairs.

Check Seals around Windows and Doors

Cold weather can cause caulking to crack or deteriorate. If the seals around the windows and doors of your home are eroding, you’ll need to scrape out all of the caulk and reseal the area. This task will not only help keep water out of your home but can also help reduce cooling costs in the warmer months ahead.

Service Your Home’s Cooling System

As temperatures continue to rise, the last thing you want is to be caught on a sweltering day without a working cooling system. Since your home’s cooling system has been out of use for the season, it’s a good idea to have the system serviced to ensure it is in proper working order.

Clean the Gutters

Gutters are an important part of your home’s structure as they collect and direct water away from your home and foundation, preventing water from seeping into your home and causing damage. Clear your gutters of any leaves and debris. If there are leaks in your gutters, be sure to hire an insured professional to repair or replace them.

Check Smoke Detector Batteries

Are your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors working properly? Take the time to change the batteries in both of these life-saving devices, and be sure to replace devices that are 10 years old.

The sun is finally out and here to stay, but before you sit back and relax you’ll want to take care of these seasonal home maintenance tasks. Not only will you feel accomplished knowing that your home is protected, but you’ll also have more time to soak up the sunshine and enjoy the beautiful weather of spring and summer!
